IAV Automotive Engineering out of Germany has recently secured an impressive patent for their electric vehicle wireless road charging system. That’s right, it magically beams energy to your electric car.
The technology would work by installing electrical conductors into rodas. These conductors would generate magnetic fields which charge an electric vehicle’s battery as it drives. RFID tags would mark your electric car and keep track of how much energy you use so you can be billed appropriately.
If this works as described, this could spell disaster for all the companies scrambling to establish battery charging and swapping station infrastructures.
The IAV electric car charging system would not only eliminate any concerns about range anxiety not to mention that the whole system is resistant to weather and mechanical wear as well as having the ability to charge vehicles traveling at high speeds or even while parked.
So far, test at IAV are showing an impressive 90% efficiency of energy transfer from conductors to vehicles. The conductors also have sensors that detect when a vehicle is near and only operate when necessary.
IAV expects that this technology will be commercially available within three years.

Welcome to Iowa. Please Plug In Your Car.

Businessman Mike Howard has erected four charging stations in Elk Horn, a town of 650 people about an hour east of Omaha. He has plans to install four more soon. No, that’s not many at all, and they’re in the middle of nowhere. But Howard says you’ve got to start somewhere, especially if you envision a network of charging stations stretching from Denver to Chicago along Interstate 80. He likens his network to the Pony Express.
“They had to have stations to continue on to deliver the mail,” Howard told the Associated Press. “This is a modern-day Pony Express.”
Many automakers are developing electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, and cars like the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf are expected by the end of next year. The big question has been where people are supposed to plug them in when they aren’t home. We’ve seen campaigns to create “charging corridors” spring up in California and Arizona, and of course Better Place has an ambitious plan for a charging infrastructure people would subscribe

The supermarket chain is launching a city-wide electric vehicle charging network at eleven stores, including Beckton; Camden; Chiswick; Cromwell Road; East Dulwich; Greenwich Peninsula; Islington; North Cheam; Sydenham; Wandsworth and Whitechapel. Nine of the charging points are open now, with Wandsworth and Whitechapel opening later this month. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plug-In Cars Are Almost Here,

but Charging Stations Lag
DETROIT —
Even though several automakers plan to begin selling electric vehicles next year, their sales may be limited by the lack of a national infrastructure to support them, speakers at a conference here on plug-in cars said on Wednesday.
Among the biggest challenges for automakers is overcoming consumers’ fears of becoming stranded with a dead battery — what the industry calls “range anxiety.”
“This isn’t just an experiment for us,” said William Clay Ford Jr., Ford Motor’s executive chairman. “We can provide the vehicles; we can provide the hardware. But we cannot unilaterally solve all of the national issues.”
Though automakers are testing numerous propulsion technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells, batteries are seen as the most promising near-term answer for reducing oil imports and emissions. President Obama has called for a million plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles to be on the nation’s highways by 2015.
The price in the future is going to be cents per mile, said Tom Kuhn, the Edison Electric Institute’s president. “It’s not miles per gallon.”

Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles Mandatory in France by 2015
October 5th, 2009

Last week, France unveiled plans to go electric, making it both possible and convenient for commuters in the nation to purchase and engage in the regular use of hybrid vehicles. To date, the lack of charging stations in France has made it difficult for drivers to adopt the more eco-friendly method of transportation, and France is ready to change that, in turn reducing their carbon footprint.

Highway 101 in California Goes Electric

October 1st, 2009
The process of turning California’s Highway 101 into an electric roadway is beginning, and for a short period of time the charging stations that will be installed can be used for free. Beginning in October, Solarcity will be installing vehicle charging stations alogn Highway 101 between San Francisco and Los Angeles in order to reward those who have already made a move to adopt a cleaner lifestyle with clean technology in their vehicles. The idea is to provide a place for electric vehicles to charge up (in this case, eight of them), giving commuters another option than the outlet at home. It also benefits from the fact that it wouldn’t require a lot of infrastructure to be installed, as a city-wide smart grid would

Matching funds are being provided by the cities and states, for a total investment of $199.6 million. The recharging data will be turned over to the Department of Energy, which required Nissan to have 1,000 vehicles on the road in everyday use to make the data valid. Nissan originally said it would launch electric-vehicle fleet sales in the United States in 2010 and start retail sales through its dealerships in 2012. But Perry has maintained that retail sales could start earlier than 2012 if individual markets and dealers were ready.Read more: http://www.autoweek.com/article/20090806/CARNEWS/908069996#ixzz0NeqVEyJN
