This interesting Volkswagen Beetle might look all beat up from the outside, but inside the boot you'll find an electric engine. The entire setup costs $29,995 - but think about the amount of dough you'll save in the long run whenever you laugh at friends who moan and groan about ever rising oil prices. It costs just two cents per mile to charge its batteries, and comes with a 120 volt built-in charger. This electrified Beetle can hit a top speed of 75 MPH with a 70 mile range, and will be able to make it from San Franciso to New York and back at the cost of a mere $112. Acceleration-wise, this car ain't too shabby either, hitting 40 MPH from a standing stop within 6 seconds. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volvo Confirms C30 Electric Car
August 5, 2009
Is Volvo Building an Electric Car?

Volvo is currently developing a plug-in hybrid version of the V70. But could the company also be working on a battery electric car?
There has been Internet chatter that Volvo, which has already said it will make a plug-in hybrid vehicle, will also produce an electric version of its C30. Then the other day, a source who is pretty high up in the electric car industry and who has done some work with Volvo, told me that the electric C30 was more than a rumor.
“Am I reasonably confident that the battery E.V. is a go?

Hybrid Trucks Are Here for the Long (Medium and Short) Haul
An explosion in the number and kind of commercially available hybrid trucks means battery power isn't just for lightweight commuter vehicles anymore
Hybrid trucks use 20 to 50 percent less diesel than conventional vehicles do, depending on how they're used, and that adds up: FedEx calculated that its fleet of 170 hybrid–electric trucks has racked up 3.5 million miles (5.6 million kilometers) of service. The 200 hybrid trucks United Parcel Service (UPS) will add to its fleet later this year are expected to save 176,000 gallons (665,000 liters) of fuel per year, which is the equivalent of taking 100 conventional package delivery trucks off the road. Nissan has received a $1.6 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy loan to modify its Smyrna, Tennessee, plant to produce electric vehicles and batteries to power them, with production starting in 2012.
The car shown Monday uses a lithium-ion battery pack that is placed under the vehicle floor to allow for more cabin and luggage space. The braking system recharges the battery while the car is driving, extending the driving range to 160 kilometers (99 miles) under a full charge, Nissan said. With the lighter weight and more energy efficient batteries, the new electric car can double the milage of the

General Motors Plans Plug-In Buick SUV as 2011 Model (Update1)
Share Email Print A A A
Aug. 6 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. plans what it says may be the first plug-in electric sport-utility vehicle, a 2011 Buick model that uses some technology from the Chevrolet Volt.
The Buick model will be introduced as a standard SUV in 2010, followed by a plug-in version the next year for use in commercial fleets, GM Vice Chairman Tom Stephens said in a speech today at a Traverse City, Michigan, conference. A Buick plug-in version for individual customers would follow shortly.
GM, which is 61 percent-owned by the U.S. Treasury after a U.S.-backed bankruptcy, is introducing models with greater fuel efficiency as federal mileage requirements rise 35 percent by 2016. The Volt sedan, powered by batteries that can be recharged through a household electrical outlet, is scheduled to go on sale in November 2010.

Top 7 Issues for an Electric Car Conversion
Published June 2, 2009
Consumers eager to get behind the wheel of an electric car have experienced crushing disappointment for many years. But now, they may finally have their chance.
Major auto companies—like Ford, Chevy and Nissan—plan to roll out the next generation of practical, affordable plug-in cars in 2011 or 2012. Niche players like Tesla, Fisker, and Miles are also hitting the market.
But what if you can’t wait two or three years

Shelby Super Cars' SSC Ultimate Aero tops out at 257 miles per hour. For its next trick, the company says it can move a motor home 150 miles on electric power alone.
Looks like grandma and grandpa might show up for Thanksgiving after all Shelby Super Cars' SSC Ultimate Aero beat the Bugatti Veyron for the title of world's fastest production car (the Guinness people said so). Now, the company is teaming up with a designer of high-end motor home chassis to create a hybrid RV that can travel 150 miles on electric power alone.

Nissan unveiled on Sunday its first all electric car, the Leaf, vowing to open a new chapter for the troubled auto industry and take a lead over its bigger rivals in zero emission vehicles.
The mid-sized hatchback, which will go on sale in late 2010 in Japan, the United States, and Europe, represents a bold bet by Nissan that hybrids are merely a passing fad on the road to pure electric vehicles.
The Leaf, described by Nissan as "the world's first affordable, zero-emission car," can travel more than 160 kilometres (100 miles) on a single charge, at a top speed of 140 kilometres per hour, the company said.=====================================================================

Plug-in Electric Cars Not the Answer ?

If you are one of the informed people who think plug-in electric cars will save us all, read on for a major disappointment.
1. Where does the power come from to charge these wondrous vehicles of the future? From the grid. Over half of all the electricity generated in the US comes from coal. How clean is that? 2. How much power is lost in transmission from the plant to your charging station in your garage? Over 7% gone in the ether. Wasted. 3. How long will the battery packs last?

Electric Passenger Van Greens Tourism
Because the E-jeepney can hold up to 14 people, the vehicle can serve as a green option for transportation fleets

When will American auto manufacturers go green? Oh, yes, when they get more green bail out money. Maybe the Philippine Utility Vehicle, Inc. and Green Renewable Independent Power Producer, Inc. team can show them the way. The duo recently launched an electric passenger vehicle, the E-jeepney, in an effort to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
The E-jeepney has a battery that after charging during your nine-to-five workday, is ready to travel for up to 55 miles at speeds of nearly 40 miles an hour, but is most efficient at 30 miles. It is well-suited for neighborhoods and city streets.Like other all-electric vehicles, it lacks a combustion engine and therefore does not emit pollutants.

Daimler working on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG electric sports car

Mercedes-AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz, is developing an electric version of its upcoming SLS AMG sports car. The electric SLS AMG uses 4 electric motors with a combined peak output of 392 kW (526 hp) and torque of 880 Nm (649 lb-ft). The SLS AMG electric sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 4 seconds - on par with the conventional SLS AMG with a 6.3-liter V8 engine developing 420 kW (571 hp). The conventional SLS AMG is scheduled to be launched in spring 2010.
The 4 electric motors are positioned near the wheels with one transmission per axle

- Quite a turnaround for Daimler/Mercedes-Benz to go from insisting on pushing diesel cars like every other European car-maker to launching hybrid models and now moving on to electric cars. This is a step in the right direction and the electric SLS AMG follows the path blazed by the Tesla Roadster and the Tesla Model S. Mercedes-Benz has always been a higher-end, luxury car-maker but with this AMG offering it looks like they are aiming even higher. In time the innovation and technology should trickle down

Electric garbage truck is powered by garbage
By Loz Blain February 5, 2009

but in what is believed to be a world first, a small town in the UK has debuted an electric municipal garbage truck that's powered by the garbage it collects. Kirklees council has deployed a modified Ford Transit with a 40kWh lithium-ion battery pack as its first silent garbage truck - and the trash it collects is burned back at the Energy from Waste center, generating enough energy to recharge the truck's batteries and pump another ten megawatts back into the power grid.
The British town of Huddersfield may be the first in the world to have a fully electric garbage truck, let alone one that is powered by its own garbage. The truck is a 3.5-tonne Ford Transit that has been retro-fitted with a 40kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving it a top speed of 50mph and a range of around 100 miles, which is more than enough to make the rounds of the 25 new "split bins" around town.
Back at the plant, much of the garbage is burned in an electricity generator. Around 10 megawatts per day is returned to the national power grid, and the council have installed a charging station for the van to hook up with overnight for a full 6-8 hour charge. Sensible thinking!

Home Energy Station to expand fuel cell applications
-Tuesday October 7, 2003 Honda has established an experimental Home Energy Station (HES) that generates hydrogen from natural gas for use in fuel cell vehicles and can also supply electricity and hot water to the home. Part of ongoing research by Honda into hydrogen energy sources, the new system can currently produce enough hydrogen to refill the tank of a Honda FCX hydrogen fuel cell vehicle taking just a few minutes once a day.
Located on the grounds of Honda R&D Americas in Torrance, California, the HES system will undergo experiments in hydrogen production, storage and fuelling. It consists of a reformer to extract hydrogen from natural gas, a refiner to purify the hydrogen, a compressor and a high-pressure tank to store the pressurized hydrogen and a fuel cell unit that provides power for the overall system using some of the extracted hydrogen.
The experimental unit produces hydrogen at a rate of up to 2Nm3/hour (purity of 99.99% or higher) and has a storage capacity 400 litres @ 420 atmospheres.
