Yamaha's EC-f electric motorcycle has two wheels and one plug
Motorcycles are light, small, and easily able to ride up on sidewalks in search of hidden power plugs. They're the perfect electric vehicle but, despite a few notable exceptions, they're still powered by dino juice. Yamaha, makers of the raucous crossplane crank R1 sportbike, has decided to go a little bit cuter for its vision of the rechargeable future, the EC-f. It features an aluminum frame, a lithium ion battery, and styling cues that will have riders worrying about that green ring turning red. That, of course, assumes this will ever actually have riders, which is doubtful given the fate of most fanciful Tokyo Motor Show concepts like this.

POWERED-DOWN
With its 14-horsepower electric motor, Joules “is so powerful, it could probably climb a tree,” Morgan jokes. In fact, the motor would push too hard had he not added an electronic speed and current controller that limits it to 28 percent of its total horsepower. (It maxes out at 2,400 rpm, which is far too fast for a bike—pro cyclists usually crank at 100 to 110 rpm.) Morgan also managed to slow the rotation of the pedals to a more manageable maximum of 90 rpm, or an estimated top speed of 30 mph, by adding several rotating belts and chains to Joules’s torso. That increased the torque as well, giving the robot enough power to carry the rider up the hill and beyond.

Zero S: electrifying, expensive

The first street-legal electric bike in Canada is great while running errands around town
Nov 14, 2009

Zero Motorcycles, a small California firm located in Scotts Valley, just north of Santa Cruz, is the brainchild of aeronautical engineer Neal Saiki. The Zero S electric street bike is the first street-legal electric bike available in Canada
What's it like living with an electric bike? Around town, it's fabulous. Handling is ultra light, bordering on twitchy – though this never wavered confidence due to my test bike's modest top speed (production models will be rated at 110 km/h).
Although the 80 km range seems paltry, it's adequate for city hopping, especially since a recharge is a wall outlet away. Stopping for lunch? Ask to run an extension cord outside while you eat.

Electric vehicle makers seek 25% govt subsidy
Sales of electric vehicles, primarily scooters, which had been growing at a healthy clip last year, have stagnated in recent months. In the absence of incentives from the government, such as a reduction in duties and help in setting up charging stations, companies such as Hero Electric, Electrotherm India Ltd and Reva Electric Car Co. are finding it difficult to boost sales.
Cuts in petrol prices announced in December and February have also acted as a dampener by narrowing the incentive in shifting to electric vehicles.
“This (industry) has to be seeded by the government by incentivizing people to buy our products,” says Sohinder Gill, chief executive of Hero Electric, the Hero Group arm that sells electric two-wheelers.

The highly-desirable 1000 watt Limited Edition TidalForce M-750 x2.0 electric fold-up bike

Military-funded projects often pave the way for a much better consumer product, and although the original DARPA funding of the development of the Tactical Electric No Signature (TENS) Mountain bike for Marines and paratroopers is now over a decade old, hold onto your hats folks, because the design has been upgraded and will be sold in limited quantities with a 1000 watt propulsion system. The TidalForce M-750 x2.0 is based around the commercially available (and ingenious) Montague Paratrooper folding bike but has a top speed of over 30 mph and range on a single charge is 25 - 28 miles, using the electric power only. The E+ advanced propulsion system features nine forward power modes, nine resistance (exercise) modes, cruise control and anti-theft. It folds to 3 x 3 ft, so it fits in the boot, and the componentry is first class with RockShox Tora 302 Forks, Shimano XTR brakes, FSA Gossamer 30/38/52 tooth crank set, Crane Creek Thudbuster ST seat suspension and a WTB Speed-V Seat. Like we said - highly-desirable. Read More

Autoparts giant Magna quietly enters e-bike marketS
August 8th, 2009
Nearly two years ago Magna Marque, a subsidiary of Magna International, quietly acquired a small company in Quebec called EPS Energy Propulsion Systems Inc., maker of the BionX e-bike kit. Manfred Gingl, founder and president of Magna Marque and former CEO of parent company Magna International, had a personal interest in bicycle technology and realized the market for e-bikes would be huge. Today, I have a story in the Toronto Star (sidebar here) that for the first time gives readers an inside look at what Magna is up to and how it plans to be a leading supplier of electric propulsion systems for bicycles and other mobile products, from paddle boats to three

SHANGHAI —
The population of China owns more bikes than any other country in the world — there’s one for every three inhabitants.
Now workers upgrading to battery-powered bikes and scooters.
Even those who can afford cars are opting for the bikes, to avoid traffic jams and expensive gasoline.
There are 430 million bicycles in China, which outnumbers electric bikes and scooters 7-1.
But production of electric bicycles has soared from fewer than 200,000 eight years ago to 22 million last year, mostly for the domestic market. The industry estimates about 65 million are on Chinese roads.
Car sales are also booming but there are still only 24 million for civilian use, because few of the 1.3 billion population can afford them. Chinese cities still have plenty of bicycle lanes, even if some have made way for cars and buses.

Electric Bike Laws Give You a Shock!
Posted on 22 January 2009

Countries like the United States, Canada and Australia all have different laws and regulations for the use of electric bikes. Within each state and province there can be even more variations making the it incredibly confusing. Check with your local authorities about conflicting laws and regulations. Electric bicycles have rules that require the use of proper safety gear such as helmets.
In many places electric bikes are not allowed to be ridden on the road as part of traffic. Check into this before you receive a fine. To ride on the road could obstruct traffic and cause

http://www.usposttoday.com/e-china-the-bicycle-kingdom-is-going-electric/

US Post Today.
E-China:
The bicycle kingdom is going electric
China, the world’s bicycle kingdom — one for every three inhabitants — is going electric.

---it still has 430 million bicycles by government count, outnumbering electric bikes and scooters 7-1.
But production of electric two-wheelers has soared from fewer than 200,000 eight years ago to 22 million last year, mostly for the domestic market. The industry estimates about 65 million are on Chinese roads.---
The trend is catching on in the U.S. and elsewhere.----
In Japan, plug-in bicycles are favored by cost-conscious companies and older commuters. “Many company workers are beginning to use them to visit clients instead of driving, to save fuel costs,” Australians use electric bicycles in rural towns without bus and train service---
In the Netherlands, an especially bicycle-friendly country, the industry says sales passed 138,800 last year.

India, Vietnam
China, electric bikes sell for 1,700 yuan to 3,000 yuan ($250 to $450). They require no helmet, plates or driver’s license, and they aren’t affected by restrictions many cities impose on fuel-burning two-wheelers.

It costs a mere 1 yuan (15 U.S. cents) — about the same as the cheapest bus fare — to charge a bike for a day’s use, says Guo Jianrong, head of the Shanghai Bicycle Association, an industry group.
With price competition brutal among China’s 2,300 electric bike and scooter makers, manufacturers have shied away from embracing costlier, cleaner technology. But bigger foreign sales and demand for better batteries may speed improvements.

“We are trying to upgrade to lithium battery technology to be able to sell internationally,” said Hu Gang, a spokesman for Xinri E-Vehicle Group Co., the country’s biggest e- bike manufacturer, with sales of more than 2 million units last year.
The goal is to boost production to more than 5 million units by 2013, he said.
“It’s not that we’re that ambitious,” Hu said. “It’s just that the industry is growing so quickly.”
