Breakthrough Material to Provide
Crash Protection and
Extended Range for Electric Vehicles

While the fuel economy
returned by the current generation of hybrid vehicles is worth bragging about, the extra weight often added by the batteries
is not. However, Volvo is out to solve this very problem by developing a material that can act as both a battery and a body panel.

The project, which led Volvo to team up with the Imperial College at London, is based on the development of a new kind of material able to hold a charge and act as a rigid exterior panel. According to the team researching the new material, it could provide up to a 15% weight savings if used correctly.
The majority of the new material will be made of carbon fiber
, likely to accommodate the force of an impact. It would act as an insulating coating to make sure your body panel batteries are safe from the elements.

Feds to test drive Mitsubishi plug-in vehicle
Plugged in: the Mitsubishi Concept, PX-MiEV at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010

The federal government has signed a deal with Mitsubishi to put the Japanese automaker's all-electric car into a demonstration and testing program – as part of a wide-ranging strategy to test the viability of alternative fuel vehicles on Canadian roads.
Transport Canada will test a pair of zero-emission i MiEVs, which have been described by some auto journalists as a pioneer in the realm of electric vehicles. (The ‘i' stands for innovative, the rest stands for "Mitsubishi In-wheel motor Electric Vehicle.")

GM Exec Says Hybrids Will Never Be Profitable
READ ARTICLE IN RESPONSE TO LUTZ !
fred schumacher
First off, Bob Lutz is the wrong person to talk to about hybrids. This is a guy who likes speed and power. Some years ago, he predicted gas would stay under $2 a gallon for a very long time. His powers of prognostication are flawed.
In addition, his company, GM, is producing a plug-in hybrid, the Volt, with totally the wrong morphology, i.e. shape, resulting in a very expensive vehicle, which would explain his opposition to hybrids. The Volt is a vehicle whose primary purpose is moving one person, the driver, between home and work.
To accomplish this task, GM chose to make it a general purpose family sedan seating five, resulting in a large, heavy, complex car costing $40,000, with batteries making up half of that cost. It's the wrong tool for the task and that's what makes it expensive.
The government should not be promoting hybrids, per se, since hybrid power trains are simply a methodology not an end. The government should be promoting lower fuel consumption, achievable by whatever economically viable means.
For example, the Fiat 500 with the new 900 cc. turbo Multiair gas engine should be able to get Prius level fuel economy but at half the price, since it is small and light and has a very efficient engine not requiring a hybrid power train to achieve good fuel economy.
Carlos Ghosn, the smartest auto executive (along with Ratan Tata), believes the future is in battery electric vehicles (BEVs). My feeling is that that's possible, but without an onboard genset to provide range extension and get-home ability, a road full of BEVs is an invitation to massive traffic jams, with vehicles with dead batteries unable to move themselves out of a roadway. This could be obviated with very small onboard generators with --more --

Renault-Nissan Alliance Forms Zero-Emission Vehicle
Partnership with State of Massachusetts
The Renault-Nissan Alliance today announced that Nissan is entering into an agreement with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to advance zero-emission mobility throughout the state by promoting the development of an electric-vehicle charging network and policies to support widespread adoptions of electric cars. The announcement was made at the Museum of Science in Boston, a stop on the Nissan LEAF Zero Emission Tour, and helps pave the way for the 2010 introduction of Nissan LEAF, the industry's first all-electric, zero-emission car designed for the mass market.
"The Renault-Nissan Alliance has committed to becoming a global leader in zero emissions," said Carlos Tavares, Chairman, Nissan Americas. "Zero-emission mobility ---

Company converts gas vehicles to plug-in hybrids
Christina Rogers /

The Detroit News
As the auto industry hustles to get plug-in electric vehicles on the road, start-up firm ALTe is taking a different approach to greening the nation's vehicles -- converting gas-guzzlers into energy-sipping electrics.
The one-year-old company specializes in plug-in electric vehicle conversions and is developing a powertrain intended to make the shift easier -- and more economical -- for companies running large fleets, such as delivery trucks and cabs.
"It's a real underserved market right now -- the fleet world," CEO John Thomas said.

Group calling on St. Paul Ford plant to produce electric cars
by Annie Baxter,
Minnesota Public Radio
January 20, 2010
St. Paul, Minn. — The advocacy group Environment Minnesota Wednesday joined with other organizations, including the United Auto Workers Local 879, to call for production of electric cars at the St. Paul Ford plant.
The plant makes the Ranger pickup truck and is slated to close in 2011.
Rob McKenzie, a UAW representative for the region, said the Ranger pick-up truck is at the end of its life expectancy, and it's time to make a new product at the St. Paul facility.
"It's been around quite a while, and it's probably due for a remake and a retooling and a remodeling," McKenzie said

Citroen C-ZERO minimizes emissions
November 16, 2009

Citroen wants to go green with their C-ZERO car, where it delivers "triple zero" with zero fuel consumption, zero CO2 emission and zero engine noise. Running on a permanent magnet synchronous motor that pumps out 47kW or 64bhp EEC from 3,000 to 6,000rpm, Citroen claims that this ride is able to hit a top speed of 130kph (80mph), while boasting an acceleration rate from 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 15 seconds and 60-90kph (37-56mph) in six seconds. Each full charge is expected to last for approximately 130km (80 miles).
Expect to see the Citroen C-ZERO launch in Q4 2010, with no word on pricing just yet.

CES: The Geek Squad goes electric, thanks to Mitsubishi

LAS VEGAS--Best Buy leased four iMiev electric vehicles from Mitsubishi in a test program for its Geek Squad. The cars, sporting Geek Squad livery, were on display at CES.

Best Buy will run the cars out of its El Segundo, Calif., store, using them to provide in-house tech support to residents in the area. Given the 80- to 100-mile range of the cars, the iMiev uses an electric motor producing 63 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque. With its 330-volt lithium ion battery pack located under the floor, it emits no CO2 on the road.
Geek Squad members will have to wait 7 hours for a full charge off of a 220-volt power supply. If Best Buy installs Mitsubishi's quick charger, an 80 percent can be achieved in 30 minutes

Its the generator motors that make the electricity,, The wind blades could just as well be water paddle wheels; You just need gears and a platform; kind of!

Or lets look at it another way; instead of a bunch of wind mills you could have a bunch of river wheels; Couldn't You? You might have to lean or channel the river waters some to increas the river depth and water push power;
Untill the River Freezes, then you have to go under the ICE.
