GM Fires Up Its Chevrolet Volt Battery Factory

Three years to the day after unveiling the Chevrolet Volt concept car, General Motors has started building the battery packs that will power the range-extended electric car — which may cost less than expected.
The first of the thousands of 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery packs the General will need for the cars rolled off the assembly line today. The packs, which use more than 200 cells apiece, are being assembled Detroit, making GM the first automaker to make lithium-ion packs in the United States.

Getting a charge from the Chevy Volt
MILFORD, Mich.--It was brief, but my ride in a Chevy Volt was decidedly fun, even exciting.

Chevy Volt will earn an EPA city mileage rating of 230 mpg. It's an astounding claim - one that would make the Volt more than four times as efficient as the Toyota Prius-----------
To illustrate this point, Nissan quickly followed GM's announcement with its own, claiming the upcoming 2010 Nissan Leaf electric car will earn a 367 mpg EPA rating.
The rules, it seems, can generate a miles-per-gallon rating for a car that doesn't even use gasoline
The Volt is one of several so-called Extended-Range Electric Vehicles, or EREVs, in development. An EREV functions as an electric car until its batteries are depleted to a certain level; then it starts a small gasoline engine. That engine, however, doesn't drive the wheels - it merely acts as a generator to rech

Henderson said that GM is confident that the combined highway and city mileage for the Chevy Volt, due to go on sale in late 2010, will be in the triple digits. Expressed in electrical terms, the performance will be 25 kilowatt-hours for 100 miles.
The cost of fueling a Volt will be significantly less than gassing up at the pump, Henderson said. In Detroit, where off-peak electricity rates are 5 cents a kilowatt hours, it will cost about 40 cents to recharge batteries overn

Chevy Volt Will Continue to Operate Even after Battery Drops Below 50% Capacity
July 24th, 2009 Battery, Engineering
Lithium-ion batteries degrade over time. There’s no getting around this fact. GM is going out of its way to pamper the Volt’s pack so as to guarantee up to 40 miles of pure electric range even at 10 years or 150,000 miles of driving. But what happens beyond that?
Most experts believe the Volt’s battery will have anywhere from 50% to 75% of its original capacity after 10 years. Since 8kwh of energy are required to deliver 40 miles of driving,

Chevy Volt's first pre-production model now on the road, in testing
by Ross Miller, posted Jun 26th 2009 at 12:38AM
And with that, the first bona fide pre-production Chevy Volt -- its own parts and all -- has hit the pavement. General Motor's storied EV will be taken through the ropes to see what needs to be tweaked / modified before it finally goes into full production, which is expected to be at a rate of about ten a week as of mid-July -- and if you happen to live near Warren, Michigan, you might just spot one of these early models out on the road. Hard to believe Volt's defied more than a few odds, but so far, it looks promising. Good on ya, GM.
