Directed Energy Weapon Downs Mosquitos

"Nathan Myhrvol demonstrated at TED a laser, built from parts scrounged from eBay, capable of shooting down not one but 50 to 100 mosquitos a second. The system is 'so precise that it can specify the species, and even the gender, of the mosquito being targeted.' Currently, for the sake of efficiency, it leaves the males alone because only females are bloodsuckers. Best of all the system could cost as little as $50. Maybe that's too expensive for use in preventing malaria in Africa but I'd buy one in a second!" He gave the first public demonstration of the laser, which was cobbled together from parts found on eBay, at the annual TED conference in Long Beach, Calif., which features lectures and demonstrations by experts in a wide range of fields, including technology, politics and entertainment. After hundreds of mosquitoes (which were kept in the hotel bathroom until showtime) were released into a glass tank, a laser tracked their movements and slowly shot them down, leaving their carcasses scattered on the bottom of the tank. While the demonstration was slowed down for public viewing, Mr. Myhrvold said that normally the lasers could shoot down anywhere between 50 to 100 mosquitoes per second. Mr. Myhrvold played a slow-motion recorded video that showed what happened to a representative mosquito. As the insect flew, a sudden light beam struck it, disintegrating parts of its body into a plume of smoke. It fell, even as its wings continued to beat. Mr. Myhrvold said the software detects the speed and size of the image before deciding whether to shoot. It would reject a butterfly or a human, for example, and more powerful laser blasts could be used for locusts. In regions afflicted by malaria, the lasers could be used to create protective fences around clinics, homes, or even agricultural fields as a substitute for pesticides. - Full Article Source

BHEL to focus on transmission equipment, renewable energy
Eyes Rs 45,000-cr turnover in 2011-12.
Anil Sasi
New Delhi, Feb. 13
With competition intensifying in the power generation equipment business, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is planning to step up focus on other areas of operations, including the transportation sector, transmission equipment and renewable energy.
The state-owned firm is planning to form special purpose vehicles (SPVs) for increasing focus on some of these businesses, company officials said.
A bevy of competitors has begun entry into the high-end power equipment business — including the L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Electric combine, Bharat Forge-Alstom, Toshiba-JSW, Italian firm Ansaldo and a host of Chinese firms.
Despite the increasing competition in its mainstay power equipment business, BHEL expects to revise upwards its Rs 45,000-crore turnover target for 2011-12, backed by an increasing thrust on its other business areas.

"SPIN, BABY, SPIN"
Edward Fitzpatrick: Will R.I.

tap the ‘Saudi Arabia of wind’?
01:00 AM EST on Sunday, February 14, 2010

Another Republican, Governor Carcieri, has been repeating a different chant — “spin, baby, spin” — in pushing to build wind turbines off the coast of Rhode Island. And he invoked that phrase again Tuesday at a forum called “Advancing the Green Economy.”
“Out West and in the Midwest they’ve got oil, they’ve got natural gas, etc., and their theme is ‘drill, baby, drill,’ ” Carcieri said. “We don’t have any oil. We don’t have any natural gas.”
But we do have access to the “Saudi Arabia of wind” off the East Coast, he said, and David Farmer, dean of the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, has coined the phrase for harnessing that energy: “Spin, baby, spin.”

I've always told my husband I prefer a potted plant to cut flowers any day. Potted plants last longer, bloom longer and are far more eco-friendly
than cut flowers. So when I came across a link for magic beans with a message of love I was naturally excited.

The magic beans I'm talking about have nothing to do with the fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk. These magic beans are real and when they sprout a love message appears. All they need to grow is a little water and some patience and in a week or two the hidden message will appear above the surface. Most magic beans come in a kit with a container, soil and the magic beans.
At littlethingsfavors.com you can even have the magic beans personalized with your own small message. These beans come in terra cotta pots, but there are also magic beans that come in a can from Magic Beans For You or in a wood box from Wrapables.

In Detroit, Is There Life After the Big 3?
In Alaska is their Life After Oils Free Money Leaves ?
Dozens of Michigan manufacturers like W Industries are discovering there is indeed life beyond the auto industry. Over the last two years, multinationals and start-ups alike have been coming to the state to build, buy or design a hodgepodge of products, whether aircraft parts, solar cells, or batteries for electric cars.
In September, for instance, NTR, a solar energy company from Ireland, awarded contracts to two Detroit-area auto suppliers, including the race-car engine developer McLaren Performance Technologies, to make components for thousands of SunCatcher solar dishes.

ConocoPhillips announced Wednesday that it planned to sell $10 billion in assets, slash capital spending to $11 billion next year, boost its dividend and pay down debt.
Is this window dressing ahead of putting the company up for sale?
The third-largest U.S. oil company, with production of 1.78 million barrels of oil (and gas equivalents) per day, is probably too big to be bought. But it could be an excellent merger partner for a mid-sized oil company with a strong exploration team.

Wind Permits in Offshore Round (Update1)
Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) --
RWE AG, Statoil ASA and Centrica Plc won licenses in Britain’s $120 billion offshore wind program, the world’s biggest, as the nation plans deep-water turbines to meet emission targets and help avert an energy shortfall.
--The U.K., facing dwindling North Sea fuel output and aging nuclear resources, plans to boost power generation while curbing emissions by building turbines far off land where winds are strongest. That may contribute more than half the power needed to meet U.K. renewables goals, which call for 15 percent of energy from alternative sources by 2020,
---The offshore wind industry may amount to 75 billion pounds ($120 billion) and create as many as 70,000 jobs by 2020, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said today. The U.K. has nine operating offshore farms with capacity of about 690 megawatts, enough for 400,000 homes, according to the British Wind Energy Association.

the Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System could be headed your way. Although engine-less, the Gryphon still has an electronic guidance system and heads-up display navigation and all equipment is cleverly tucked away making for better “stealth” flights.
Aimed at the military, this high-tech human gliding device allows parachutists to leap from planes and glide in any chosen direction (except up) at speeds around 60mph - a somewhat conservative speed suggested by the manufacturers - SPELCO
SPELCO says the Gryphon system is designed for use in “high-altitude, high-opening” jump missions, typically carried out by Special Forces. This 6ft wing delivers great maneuverability with a glide ratio of 5:1, which means if you step out at five miles high (26,000ft), you can glide for 25 miles.

XOM XTO: The view from TexasThe Exxon/XTO story is one of the year's top stories in shale gas. If shale gas changes everything, this deal changes everything too.
Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil's local paper The Houston Chronicle put the deal into perspective:
The XTO purchase shows Exxon Mobil believes the near future will be powered by natural gas. In what may be the most significant deal in the Oil Patch since, well, Exxon bought Mobil, energy's 8,000-pound gorilla has revealed its main strategy for dealing with both climate change legislation and the declining primacy of oil.
Exxon Mobil and other major oil companies have been struggling for years to find large new deposits of crude.
The rise of government-controlled reserves worldwide and political instability in places such as Iraq and Nigeria have left them with few options.
Despite this week's bickering in Copenhagen, Exxon Mobil and its Big Oil buddies know that climate change legislation is inevitable. It doesn't matter whether they, or any one else, agrees with the science. Most of the world's policymakers are moving toward legislation to combat carbon emissions.
And if you don't get the point of this all, we'll just have to emphasise it:

Burning natural gas still emits carbon, but far less than oil or coal. That, combined with its abundance, makes it the logical transition fuel.
We can think of a certain energy adviser here in the UK who is a physicist. Is it logical to him yet? We're asking the question today. We won't hold our breath, but we will get an answer.
And for the rest of the US Energy industry, formerly called Big Oil?
"There's just going to be a natural migration to these unconventional plays by the majors,.... The majors are going to be sucking them in like a giant black hole.

"Make no mistake, Exxon Mobil's move is the beginning of a decades-long restructuring of the domestic energy industry. It's the start of a migration from oil toward other fuels. That's been talked about for years, but it's been mired in speculation over renewable fuels that aren't economical without government subsidies.
Now, that's changed.
After this week, the smart money is now on gas.
Pardon us while we crow. At least we won't have to eat it.
But come January, one can be sure that once the Copenhagen story subsides, the shale bandwagon will suddenly get real crowded.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chemtex To Build LNG Plant In China

by Black & Veatch
December 22, 2009

Nearly 4.6 million people living in Guang'an City, P.R. China will soon have greater access to natural gas, resulting in new jobs and cleaner air.
China Natural Gas Co. Ltd, (CNGC) selected Black & Veatch and Chemtex to design and build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility that will provide area residents with a cleaner and more economical fuel source for transportation, as well as industry and home use.
"The new plant will create approximately 100 jobs," said Li Zhongwei, General Manager of China Natural Gas Guangan Co. Limited. "In addition, CNGC is building 20 LNG gas stations for public transportation and bus fuel and 10 mobile LNG stations resulting in additional jobs for area residents."
The facility will provide natural gas supplies to China's West to East gas pipeline during peak usage times or when demand for natural gas is at its highest, usually during cold winter months. LNG from the facility also will be transferred by truck to areas where there is limited or no natural gas infrastructure, reducing the need for diesel and coal.
LNG is not only considered as a cleaner, safer,

Like you, I was fascinated by reports that the astronauts had installed and started to operate a water recovery system on the international space station, one that processes urine as well as all the other liquids the humans and machines on the vehicle produce. In the words of Science Daily, "that includes water evaporated from showers, shaving, tooth brushing and hand washing, plus perspiration and water vapor that collects within the astronauts' space suits. They even transfer water from the fuel cells that provide electric power to the space shuttle."

One cow, claim the scientists, could produce enough hydrogen to supply hot water for 19 houses. A gallon of urine could theoretically power a car with a hydrogen fuel cell for 90 miles. A refrigerator-sized unit, they say, “could produce one kilowatt of energy for about $5,000.” Someone might have to help me out on that last one. That can’t be per kilowatt, or “kilowatt-hour” (how we usually measure electricity usage), because a kilowatt-hour costs about 10 cents these days. I’m assuming that it would cost about $5,000 to build a unit like that, and the cost to run it would largely fall upon your kidneys. (Maybe?) Commercial farms, required to pool their animal waste anyhow, could power themselves with all the spare hydrogen.
It’s a pretty neat idea, and one that I actually had a long time ago. I have to give

How electricity became a right, and what it means for broadband
December 14, 2009
Glenn Fleishman's "The Killer App of 1900" draws striking parallels between the present-day debate over the necessity of Internet access and the early 20th century debate over the necessity of electricity. In the early days of electrification, electricity was a luxury, providing lights to a few people who chose electric over gas. The idea that electricity was a necessity (let alone a right) was widely held to be absurd. But because of the many applications for electric power, electrification quickly grew to be central in most Americans' lives, and many electrification projects were ultimately taken on by governments, from the local to the national (FDR's Rural Electrification Act). Undoubtedly, you see where I've been going with all this. Broadband in 2009 is electricity in 1900. We may think we know all the means to which high-speed Internet access may be put, but we clearly do not: YouTube and Twitter prove that new things are constantly on the way and will emerge as bandwidth and access continues to increase.
Like electricity, the notion of whether broadband is an inherent right and necessity of every citizen is up for grabs in the US. Sweden and Finland have already answered the question: It's a birthright. Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and many European countries aren't far behind in having created the right regulatory and market conditions to bring better and affordable broadband to a greater percentage of its citizens than in the US.

Hydrogenics Announces Electrolyzer
Award for Additional California Fueling Station
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada -

December 10, 2009 - Hydrogenics Corporation,

a leading developer and manufacturer of hydrogen generation and fuel cell products, today announced that the Company has been awarded a contract for one of its HySTAT-30 electrolyzers to be used at a fueling station in Los Angeles, California.

The fueling station will serve vehicles as part of California's "Hydrogen Highway" initiative; Hydrogenics had previously supplied an electrolyzer-based hydrogen generation system to Shell Hydrogen LLC for a similar fueling station on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Los Angeles.

"California's Hydrogen Highway network is meant to support the increasing number of zero emission vehicles that will be available over the coming years," said Daryl Wilson, President and CEO. "A large, reliable fueling infrastructure is critical to the mass adoption of alternative energy vehicles, and Hydrogenics is well positioned for the requisite hydrogen generation.

By 2017, the State of California estimates that 50 to 100 retail hydrogen stations will be necessary to meet the demand created by both automotive and bus deployments.
Hydrogenics will continue to seek out opportunities for our unique technologies to assist in this rapid growth."

Air Liquide Completes Hydrogen Fueling Project for Shell Hydrogen

HOUSTON–Reducing greenhouse gases and pollution in cities is one of society’s main challenges and a core commitment of Air Liquide in the pursuit of sustainable development. Using hydrogen as energy for transportation is a promising solution for sustainable mobility.
Air Liquide has completed the installation of a fueling system for Shell Hydrogen in the Bronx, New York. In addition to the fueling equipment, Air Liquide is also supplying the hydrogen gas and liquid nitrogen required for operations. The station will provide fueling capability in support of General Motors’ Project Driveway vehicles and serve as another site in the network being developed in New York in anticipation of other auto manufacturers introducing fuel cell vehicles to the area.

Air Liquide’s technology is also used at a station in Ardsley, New York.
Air Liquide has also provided fueling systems in California and Delaware, and in many countries around the world. Air Liquide’s hydrogen fueling systems are built in the U.S. with proprietary engineering designs from Air Liquide Advanced Technologies U.S. LLC. The technology is capable of filling a car at 700 bar (10,000 p.s.i.) pressure in less than five minutes.

Wind and solar energy
We are involved in wind energy and helped to develop solar power technology on a commercial scale. Shell’s wind projects are located mainly in North America and also in Europe.

Wind
Shell is involved in eight wind projects in North America and three in Europe. Total capacity is around 1,100 megawatts, with Shell’s share at 50%. Shell’s share of wind-generated electricity saves around 1 million tonnes of CO2 a year compared to the same quantity generated from a coal-fired plant.
Solar
Joint venture partner Saint-Gobain has acquired Shell’s 50% stake in the AVANCIS photovoltaic company in Germany. AVANCIS currently has a total capacity of 20MWp. This step is part of Shell's move to focus on alternative energies closest to its core competencies of biofuels and
CO2 capture and storage, as explained in our
March 2009 strategy update.
Together with Saint-Gobain, Shell has taken an important renewable technology from the R&D stage to the point of large-scale manufacturing, which is a small but key contribution towards helping resolve the energy challenge.
