21 companies that will lead the green car charge
December 31, 2009

Last January, VentureBeat ran a story listing 30 electric car companies poised to make a splash over the next couple of years. That post went on to become one of the most popular in the history of this web site, racking up 189 comments.
Today, we bring you a redux of that article — but instead of a list of all of the companies with an EV in a works, here’s a rundown of 21 companies were strong and focused enough to make progress toward something realistic this year.

Most electric cars, especially small ones, are thought to be slow and weak. We set out to blow some minds by designing the Tango to accelerate through the standing 1/4 mile in 12 seconds at over 120 mph - and travel from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds. The Tango can do this because it has two motors, with each motor having more Torque than a Dodge Viper V10 engine, starting at zero RPM. Who would think a car this narrow could compete? Consider all the cars we beat! The Tango beat the Tesla Roadster and Shelby Cobra in separate drag races, as well as several Corvettes in an autocross.
Charging The Tango can be charged from most any receptacle, as it comes with a number of adaptor cords, and can charge to 80% in just 10 minutes from a 200 amp charging station. Typically, one would just plug in each night to a dryer outlet and get a complete charge in less than 3 hours and be ready for work the next morning. It can charge from any voltage from 100V to 250V without any adjustment. For more

My wife and I drive an Electric Car every day. You could too! There is no need to wait for big car companies to come out with $40,000 production EVs - you can build your own EV for as little as $6,000. EVs are great to drive and perfectly suited for day-day commuting. There is very little maintenance as the only wearing parts are tyres and brakes. No oil, no water, no exhaust system and just one moving part in the motor. Think about it - most of your car maintenance and repairs are due to that horrible old petrol engine.
Our EV is charged from my home solar PV panels, so we pay nothing for fuel. To convert a car to electric drive and install the PV panels costs less than a new medium size petrol car.
I really like the idea that I have "recycled" a 15 year old petrol car into an EV - saving all the embodied energy required to manufacture a new car. So we emit no greenhouse gases in driving or charging our EV, and the greenhouse gases to build it were also very low (as we recycled an existing car chassis). At the end of their life the batteries are nearly 100% recyclable. Try doing that with petrol!
Best of all - the "fuel" for our EV is made right here at home - no dependance on dirty, rapidly depleting oil from other countries.
=====
In April 2009 we converted another Charade from ICE to Electric in just 3 days! We had originally planned 1 week, but had so much fantastic help we had a drivable electric car way ahead of schedule. It was a community effort - up to 10 people were helping at any one time. A great way to spend a weekend - recycling a petrol car to clean, renewable, electric drive
The conversion cost was around $8,000, the EV has a top speed of 75 km/hr and a range of around 50 km. Perfect for metro commuting. The conversion is based on the low cost Chinese EV kit with 8 110AH lead acid batteries.
We blogged on the conversion each day, and even took time lapse pictures so you can see the conversion coming together over the three days:

Columbia ParCar Corp. has received its second major vehicle order in three months from the federal government, bringing to nearly 1,000 the total number of low-speed, all-electric cars that the Reedsburg-based company will make for the government.
In September, the company received an order from the Army for 799 electric vehicles. At the time, it was the single largest such order in the industry’s history, the company said.
The second order, issued in late November, is for another 192 units, which are designed to transport people and cargo and sometimes are called Neighborhood Electric Vehicles. These vehicles are destined for Air Force, Navy and Marine bases, as well as certain Federal Aviation Administration installations, Kennedy Space Center and several national parks.

Time for Postal Service fleet to go green, lawmaker says
From horse-drawn wagons to stage coaches, trains and 18-wheelers, the U.S. Postal Service has used virtually every mode of transportation to deliver the mail. But a New York lawmaker says it's time for the mail service to start using at least 20,000 electric vehicles to stamp out the agency's environmental waste.
The Postal Service said it operates the largest civilian fleet of vehicles in the world, with about 220,000 vehicles traveling more than 1.2 billion miles each year.
The agency's entire fleet consumed 121 million gallons of fuel in 2008, costing it roughly $1.3 billion, officials said.
Agency vehicles average 10.4 miles a gallon since most drive slowly and make frequent stops between mailboxes.
Rep. Jose E. Serrano (D-N.Y.) wants to put the postal fleet to use during off-hours to help alleviate the nation's overworked power grids. He introduced a bill Wednesday that would give eventually give $2 billion to the Energy Department and Postal Service to convert current mail trucks or manufacture new ones that use vehicle-to-grid technology or V2G, as it's known.
The technology allows electricity to flow from plug-in electric or battery-powered vehicles to power lines, feeding excess electricity to the vehicles when they're not in use. In this case, postal vehicles would become temporary storage units for electricity. When necessary, power

GM plans to invest $700M in Michigan for Volt

Mon Dec 7, 2009
DETROIT – General Motors Co. said Monday it will spend $700 million at eight Michigan facilities to get its new rechargeable electric car road-ready — a technological and economic boost for its home state.
GM officials detailed their investment plans for the Chevrolet Volt on the floor of its assembly plant that straddles the border between Detroit and tiny Hamtramck. The plant, which will begin mass producing the Volt in late 2010, -----------MORE

GM said in August it expects the Volt to get 230 mpg in the city, based on early tests using draft guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for calculating mileage of extended range electric vehicles.
The car is expected to cost between $35,000 and $40,000. That price range could keep many away, but Lauckner said tax incentives for buyers are expected to make it more affordable as the company ramps up manufacturing and lowers its costs.

MIT offers City Car for the masses
Is the City Car the solution to "the last mile" problem?
The City Car, a design project under way at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is envisioned as a two-seater electric vehicle powered by lithium-ion batteries. It would weigh between 1,000 and 1,200 pounds and could collapse, then stack like a shopping cart with six to eight fitting into a typical parking space. It isn't just a car, but is designed as a system of shared cars with kiosks at locations around a city or small community.

BMW’s Electric Mini Rollout Yields
Painful’ Lessons (Update2)

Dec. 2 (Bloomberg) -- When Bayerische Motoren Werke AG introduced the Mini Cooper E this year in California and the New York area, first-time users of the electric car deluged the company with complaints about its deficiencies.
Customers groused about uninformed dealers, connection problems, cold weather affecting recharging and a range limited to 100 miles. The back seat was taken up by the battery and recharging could take almost a day.
“We are getting a lot of feedback,” Richard Steinberg, manager of electric vehicle operations and strategy for Munich- based BMW, said yesterday at the Bloomberg LP Cars & Fuels conference in Los Angeles. “We’ve had a fair share of lessons learned.”
California’s anti-pollution regulations are among the strictest in the U.S. Some car bloggers and reviewers criticize BMW for selling an inadequate Mini E to meet state rules requiring automakers to sell a quota of electric or other alternative-fuel vehicles.
“A not-entirely-civil war of words has erupted on blogs and Facebook between BMW and those who’d volunteered to pay $850 a month for the privilege of leasing a Mini E,” wrote
Dan Neil, the Los Angeles Times’ automobile critic.
Customers are learning how to manage their electric vehicles, including

Los Angeles is known by many names, among them “the quintessential city of sprawl,” “the congestion capital of the world” and the consistently top-ranked area with the country’s worst air pollution.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said it all himself, yet he still seems to believe that the city can serve another, simultaneous function: as the eco-friendly launchpad for electric cars.
By the time the vehicles are expected to appear in significant numbers in the market – late 2010 to early 2011 – Los Angeles and a coalition of partners are expected to have at least a skeleton infrastructure of charging stations ready to go, he said.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Progress Energy Adding Electric Vehicles to Fleet

December 01, 2009
RALEIGH, NC - Progress Energy recently joined with its peer investor-owned electric utilities in a national pledge to help accelerate the transition of plug-in electric vehicles, according to jdnews.com. The company was awarded grant money from the Department of Energy several months ago.
As part of the pledge, Progress Energy is adopting PEVs into its corporate fleet, which now includes seven Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, two Ford Escape PHEV prototypes, and a plug-in electric bucket truck. One Prius is parked at the Jacksonville Progress Energy location part-time.
A typical PEV overnight charge is estimated to cost less than a dollar and the vehicles also produce less carbon dioxide and pollutants than conventional vehicles, according to Progress Energy.
The PHEV in Jacksonville gets between 30 and 35 miles per battery charge, company spokesman Dan Oliver told JDnews.com. By adding the increased battery capacity to the existing Prius hybrid technology, PHEVs have the capability to achieve more than 100 miles to the gallon.
"The majority of us in the U.S. drive less than 30 or 35 miles per day," he said. "Our daily circuit is typically 35 miles or less, so that charge meets our daily need."

Nissan Leaf, Electric Vehicle Getting 367 MPG?

15 August 2009
Chevy Volt raises question: Is mpg dead?8/12/2009
That's because people increasingly may have to find a new number to compare vehicle fuel efficiency. Since the Volt can go 40 miles per plug-in charge using no gasoline, many drivers may rarely burn a tankful. An onboard gas engine charges the battery to extend its range to 300 miles.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2009-08-11-chevrolet-volt_N.htm?obref=obinsite
The coming all-electric Leaf from Nissan, which claims the car will get 367 miles per gallon under the same EPA formula, actually has no gas engine or tank on board. Leaf will go about 100 miles per full battery charge
We'll likely end up talking about "price per mile" — the cost to drive the car a mile — says Reilly Brennan, editor in chief of AOL Autos. GM calculates that at about 3 cents per mile for Volt.
"Eventually, it will change, because we're going to be getting our fuel from many different buckets — electricity, hydrogen, biofuels," Brennan says. "I think it will take about five years before people are talking about this differently."

Report: Nissan Expects 20,000 Pre-Orders for LEAF Electric Car
At a breakfast meeting for Nashville business executives, Carlos Tavares, Chairman of Nissan America, said he fully expects the company to have 20,000 reservations for the Nissan LEAF by the time the car goes on sale late next year.

Nissan has invested heavily in relationships with governments and utilities in key markets including Nashville—home to the company’s
North American sales and marketing headquarters—Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, The Bay Area, and the entire state of Oregon.
The company has also committed $2 billion for revamping its Smyrna, Tennessee, manufacturing facility to produce up to 150,000 LEAFs and 200,000 batteries each year.

Seattle's love for 'green' cars pays off as the technology goes mainstream
November 15, 2009
"We're very excited and thrilled that this is finally coming to reality," Lough says.
The city's long-running interest in EVs and recent grants from the federal government have placed Seattle among the country's leaders in developing and spreading the technology. Here are a few examples of how the city is advancing EVs:
Charging stations
EV growth
An estimated 1 million to 1.5 million plug-in electric cars could be on the road within five years. According to other estimates, a third of all new cars in the Northwest may be plug-in electric cars by 2030.
-- Associated Press
The biggest buzz-generator is the city's participation in a pilot project with Nissan and Phoenix company eTec to build 2,500 charging stations for electric vehicles.
The EV Project, which is funded by a $100 million U.S. Energy Department grant, will put 1,000 stations free of charge into the garages of people who buy a new Nissan Leaf electric car, expected to hit Seattle in 2010. The remaining 1,500 chargers will be placed in local public and commercial venues, such as shopping malls and park-and-ride lots.
Hybrid fleet
Seattle clinched the deal with Nissan and eTec because of the city's involvement in an Energy Department program to evaluate the use of plug-in electric hybrid vehicles in city motor pools, says Rich Feldman, who advises Mayor Greg Nickels

Geely still planning electric cabs in London, ETA approves
Oct 20th 2008
Way back in April, the idea for electric green Black Cabs in London was first floated. Chinese automaker Geely is apparently still working on the cabs and the U.K. authorities and watchdog agencies are beginning to pick up on the idea. The Environmental Transport Association in particular has taken notice that many cabs in London are powered by diesel engines, which may be great for fuel efficiency but not so much for human health. Many diesel-powered vehicles emit plenty of particulates that have a nasty effect on the body when inhaled. Since taxi cabs are often left idling, those particulates can get a bit out of control very fast. For this reason, the ETA is suggesting that electric Black Cabs could hold great promise and foresees a fleet of 20,000 electric taxis running through London's busy streets. Early estimates put the TX4E's top speed around 50 miles per hour and its range at about 100 miles. There should be a fleet of ten electric cabs ready for testing early next year.

India-born Reva, to be made in Central New York, will have competitors
October 25, 2009
Bannon Automotive plans to manufacture Reva electric cars in Central New York. The company would build the new Reva NXR model (above ) here. The NXR model can reach speeds up to 65 mph with a range of 100 miles on a single charge of its lithium-ion battery pack
Bannon Automotive, the little company with ambitious plans to manufacture electric cars in Central New York, isn’t the only automaker hoping that Americans are finally ready to buy electric vehicles.
Several big names in the industry — Ford, Chevrolet and Nissan, among them — also have plans to unveil electric cars soon. Some experts predict that, if gas prices take off again, electric vehicles could gradually take a significant share of the car market.

Leading automakers are racing to produce alternative energy-powered vehicles including hybrids and electric cars.
Toyota leads the industry with hybrid technology but Honda (HMC) and Ford (F) are catching up, and several manufacturers are racing to produce all-electric cars, reported Investor’s Business Daily.
For 10 years, Toyota has lead the hybrid industry, but now Honda has cut its prices to the point that Toyota has been forced to respond, IBD reported.
Ford’s Fusion hybrid competes with Honda for the number 2 spot in the U.S. hybrid market. While Toyota sticks to hybrid technology, rivals are rushing to all-electric vehicles.
Honda announced that it might make and sell all-electric cars in the U.S., Europe and Japan. This is a shift for Honda, according to IBD, as the company had put most of its alternative energy efforts into developing hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Mitsubishi started leasing its first all-electric vehicle in Japan in July, Nissan (NSANY) plans to sell its all-electric midsize sedan next year in the U.S., and GM plans to sell its all-electric Chevy Volt late next year, IBD reported.Investing in alternative-powered vehicles and technologies are covered each week in Cabot Green Investor.

Coaxing Auto Makers to Go Electric
What will it take to get more electric cars on American roads?
Lots of federal cash and maybe the auto-industry version of a "buy one, get one free" deal.
The Obama administration is proposing to spur production of electric cars with a "build one, get one free" offer:
Build one "zero emission" battery-powered vehicle, and get to count it as up to two vehicles when figuring the average fuel efficiency of a new-vehicle fleet.
The details of federal fuel economy rules are what those of us who refused to take math and science classes in college will be forced to read in purgatory. But government and industry officials familiar with the proposal say it works something like this:
Say Green Motors Co. builds 200 cars that emit 300 grams of carbon dioxide a mile, and 50 all-electric cars that don't burn any petroleum to operate. Those electric cars would get a rating of 0 grams of carbon per mile, and the car maker could use a multiplier of 1.2 to 2 when counting them toward a fleet-wide average calculation. So, in the best case for the car maker, 50 electric vehicles becomes 100. And instead of averaging 300 grams per mile per vehicle, Green Motors' fleet averages 200 grams per mile per vehicle—even though the company did nothing to the bulk of its vehicles.
That's a crude illustration, but it represents a scenario that has

Electric SUVs: A smaller footprint for big vehicles
Converting existing gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs into hybrid and electric vehicles gains traction.
Tom Reid likes his ride big – a 2000 Ford Explorer SUV with plenty of interior room and all the amenities. None of those prissy little hybrid vehicles will do for him.
But after gas hit $4 a gallon last year, Mr. Reid had a big fuel bill, too – and an epiphany: convert his gas guzzler to an all-electric vehicle.
So he did. Now Reid’s bright idea has become a sideline business for his shop, HTC Racing, which produces specialized protective coating for automotive and other metal parts in Whitman, Mass. He offers kits to convert any 1995-2004 gas-sucking Ford Explorer into a cheap-to-keep, no fuel, little maintenance all-electric SUV. Cost: $15,000.
He admits that the idea may be “ahead of its time.” Reid has yet to sell a single kit. With gas at only $2.50 a gallon, the conversion cost is too much for even SUV-loving die-hards. But if gasoline prices soar again, Reid says he’ll be ready – and he won’t be alone either

Nissan Looks Beyond Its First Electric Car
November 6, 2009
It’s just a sketch, but the drawing signals that Nissan is moving forward with plans to build an entire electric vehicle program—rather than focusing on a single vehicle.
So far, most of Nissan’s electric plans have focused on the all-electric five-seat Nissan Leaf, which will make its US debut in late 2010, followed by a European release in 2011 and a global rollout in 2012. The new sketch depicts a small multi-purpose commercial van—something like a beefed-up Nissan Leaf for businesses. Clearly targeting congested European cities, Nissan said, “The low-cost multi-purpose vehicle would allow…van and taxi drivers to enter urban areas where CO2 emissions are restricted.”

Electric-powered Ford Transit Connect

will go 80 miles between charges, other Ford electric vehicle plans revealed

Ford Motor's begun to trickle out details of its electric-vehicle plans.
It says Azure Dynamics will supply its so-called Force Drive drivetrain to create an all-electric version of its
Transit Connect small commercial van. The plug-in vehicle should go on sale to commercial customers in the U.S. and Canada late next year.
The battery-powered Transit will go at least 80 miles on a full charge, Ford says, and possibly more. A final decision hasn't been made on battery size, which will determine the range. Johnson Controls-Saft will supply the lithium-ion battery. And it will be "dual badged":
The electric Transit Connect is to be marketed as both a Ford and an Azure, and possibly warrantied by Azure, not Ford.
In 2011, Ford says, it will offer a battery only, plug-in Focus, with at least some intended for regular showroom customers rather than strictly commercial and fleet buyers.
In 2012 will come an unidentified "next-generation" hybrid (meaning it'll have a lithium-ion battery) and an also-anonymous "plug-in hybrid vehicle." Ford won't say if these will be two versions of the same model -- such as two versions

Lovegrove’s idea calls for a four passenger vehicle, which is basically a large transparent bubble in which the four passengers sit in a circular fashion. There is no driver, as the vehicles are controlled by satellite and GPS navigation. As for fuel, the vehicles are powered by solar panels installed in the roof, and one presumes, four independent electric motors, one on each wheel. The brilliant part, or the one which definitely caught our eye (as if the sci-fi inspired bubble cars weren’t enough) was his proposal to stick each vehicle at night on top of a pole in order to both save space at the ground level, and to illuminate it!

Mercedes-Benz launches B-Class F-Cell, leases to begin in early 2010 Aug 28th 2009

The front-wheel drive F-Cell is based on Mercedes-Benz's B-Class platform and uses a 100 kW electric motor that puts out an impressive 214 lb-ft of torque. MB claims this powertrain will offer comparable performance to a 2.0-liter gas-powered automobile (the run to 60 will take under 11 seconds) while returning the equivalent of 86.6 mpg on the European combined cycle.Sandwiched under the car's floor will be a 1.4 kWh lithium ion battery that recaptures energy normally lost to braking. We'd also figure that battery pack will provide an even flow of electrons to the motor while the fuel cell hums away silently. Range is quoted at around 250 miles and Mercedes claims a hydrogen recharge time of just three minutes. Expect more details on the car to emerge at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. Full press release after the break. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KAIST Online Electric Vehicle uses non-contact magnetic charging to draw its power needs from beneath the surface of the road
Scratching the surface
Thankfully solutions are already being offered, such as the Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) from KAIST.
Rather than relying on battery technology, the OLEV picks up charge using a non-contact magnetic charging method (where a power source is placed underneath the road surface and power is wirelessly picked up on the vehicle itself) so it doesn't matter if the car is moving or parked up, it still receives power.
By bus too
In July 2009 the researchers successfully supplied up to 60% power to a bus over a gap of 12cm from a power line embedded in the ground using power supply and pick up technology developed in-house.
It is thought that if only half of the Koreans currently on the road switched to the OLEV system, the country could reduce its imports of crude oil by 35 billion barrels per year, saving an estimated USD$3 billion. Thanks

New Measures to Aid Solar on Public Lands
By Kate Galbraith

Mr. Salazar, appearing in Las Vegas with Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, said that 670,000 acres of lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (an agency within the Department of the Interior) would be studied to determine whether they could support large solar power arrays. By the end of 2010, Mr. Salazar said, he expected there to be 13 commercial-scale solar projects under construction on public lands.
“There are millions of acres set aside for oil and gas. It’s about time we did something for renewable energy,” said Mr. Reid.

Population and Sustainability:
Can We Avoid Limiting the Number of People?
Slowing the rise in human numbers is essential for the planet--but it doesn't require population control By Robert Engelman

In an era of changing climate and sinking economies, Malthusian limits to growth are back—and squeezing us painfully. Whereas more people once meant more ingenuity, more talent and more innovation, today it just seems to mean less for each. Less water for every cattle herder in the Horn of Africa.
(The United Nations projects there will be more than

Successful modernization of control technology
at the storage power station in Kaprun, Austria
The provision of electrical energy to match
demand is of primary importance to the industrialized world. Storage power stations
such as the Glockner-Kaprun power station in the Austrian Alps use the energy of water
stored in storage lakes to generate valuable power. They cover peak demand yet do not
produce any emissions. The automation technology of the “Kaprun Hauptstufe” power
plant has now been completely renewed by ABB. This has given the Austrian “Verbund-
Konzern”, the plant operating company, considerable advantages: the turbines come on
load more quickly, the generators synchronize to the network in less time and the entire plant
is easier to operate and monitor.
