NEW WIND TURBINES AT GENK PLANT
Two new wind turbines at the company's Genk Plant (Belgium) complement Ford of Europe's Green Energy Initiative.
Dagenham Diesel Centre (UK) is ready to install a third turbine to achieve full power supply through wind energy.
Ford Cologne Plant (Germany) and the European Ford Technical Centres in Dunton (UK) and Cologne-Merkenich (Germany) powered by renewable energy.
Cologne/Genk, November 16, 2009 – While Ford vehicles are among the most environmentally efficient on the road, the company's commitment to a 'greener' future is reaching beyond its products and into many areas of its business operations

New Ford-Edison Vision
Each night, a large percentage of America’s power generation infrastructure sits idle.

A recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy 1 estimated that if every light duty car and truck in America today used plug-in hybrid technology, 73 percent of them could be plugged in and fueled by excess capacity in the electricity grid without constructing a single new power plant.
- Smart plug-in vehicles could become part of an integrated smart home and grid energy system of the future.
Untapped consumer benefits could be obtained by adding to the traditional utility system the energy storage and retrieval capacity of a large number of advanced batteries in plug-in hybrid vehicles.
For the first time, excess power generated by home-based units such as rooftop solar generation could be stored and used when needed by the property owner.

Hydrogen refuel station unveiled
The hydrogen home refuelling station works via an electrolyser which produces the gas from water and electricity.
An internal combustion generator converts the gas back into electricity to provide power for the home.
ITM Power has set up a showcase hydrogen home in Sheffield, where the gas is used for heating, cooking and to operate a fridge.
In terms of producing hydrogen to power a car, the unit can make enough gas overnight to provide fuel for 25 miles.
The hope is eventually to have higher-pressure refuelling units in public places which would be capable of offering enough hydrogen for cars to travel 100 miles

Cogeneration At Home: Ceramic Fuel Cells And Bloom Energy An Australian company working in this area called Ceramic Fuel Cells were in the news recently after landing a $240 million deal with Dutch energy company Nuon to supply 50,000 CHP units by 2014. The company still needs to meet a number of commercial requirements set by Nuon - in particular improving the durability of the cells from two years to four. The company is hoping that production will begin by June 2009 in a new €12.4 million factory in Heinsberg, Germany, which aims to produce 10

In 2008,
British firm ITM Power announced that they were building a home hydrogen fueling station that would be available by the end of the year. This H2 refueling station uses an inexpensive plastic membrane and electrolyzes water to produce the hydrogen. Through economies of scale the price of this unit could drop as low as $4,000.

Germany's VW, LichtBlick to
produce home power stations
September 10, 2009
Auto giant Volkswagen has teamed up with LichtBlick,
a German renewable energy company, to build up to 100,000 power stations for home use by spring 2010.Under the agreement, Volkswagen will produce the high-efficiency "EcoBlue" CHP (combined heat and power) plant, which is to be driven by gas engines from Volkswagen. LichtBlick will be marketing the plants as "ZuhauseKraftwerke" (home power plants) and will be using them for a new, intelligent heat and power supply scheme.

energy, many believe, because it has the infrastructure to support it. Gas, mostly drilled in Siberia, is already piped to most city streets in Germany. Experts predict that almost half of the electricity used will be generated from renewable sources by 2020.Volkswagen said that the "green" internal combustion engines it has developed for cars are quiet enough to operate in residential buildings' basements and emit 60 percent less carbon dioxide than thermal power plants.LichtBlick plans to initially market the home power plants in Hamburg and the first plants will be available for installation from 2010. From 2010, LichtBlick will be gradually expanding its marketing efforts to cover the whole of Germany.September 15, 2009 PDT

The generators would run off natural gas-powered engines similar to the ones that currently drive some Volkswagen Golf cars.
Exhaust heat from the engines would warm up water for showers and central heating in the homes."It's a true revolution in the electricity business," said Christian Friege, chief executive of the Hamburg-based LichtBlick, which already supplies "green" energy to homes and offices.
The plan is a challenge to bigger utility companies that generate power with huge steam turbines driven by coal or nuclear heat.

THE Home Energy Station
Honda has operated an experimental Home Energy Station in Torrance, California, since 2003.

The Home Energy Station, which generates hydrogen from natural gas, is designed to provide heat and electricity for the home through fuel cell cogeneration and to supply fuel for a hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicle.
